A valid medical cannabis certificate and medical cannabis card are the only way to consume cannabis legally in Maryland. Voters approved adult use of cannabis in the state during the November 2022 election and new laws will take effect July 1, 2023. We are on the frontlines of information and legislation and will update accordingly. This is what we know now and sign up here for email updates

We created this tool to help you easily find the differences so you can make an educated decision on what is best for you. Please note adult does not start until July 1.

Frequently Asked Question

Can I use my Maryland Medical Cannabis Card outside of Maryland?

D.C. will accept your card for purchasing but no other state.

I have a minor child (under 18), can I apply for them?

Yes, you must register as their caregiver and complete the necessary application. https://mmcc.maryland.gov/Pages/patients_regisminor.aspx

How can I apply for a hospice patient?

Follow the link and instructions to apply. If you need help, call Gwen at 443 589 5555, she is ready to help! https://mmcc.maryland.gov/Pages/Patient_regishospice.aspx

How does the rolling allotment work?
The standard amount certification issued by a provider for a patient identifies the quantity of dried flower and/or THC that the patient can purchase in a given 30-day period. The standard amount is 120 grams of dried flower or 36 grams of a THC product, however, a provider may certify a patient for more or less than the standard amount. The amount available for purchase is calculated on a rolling 30-day cycle. That is, the amount that a patient may purchase on any given day is calculated as the certified amount minus the total of all purchases made within the last 30 days. The 30-day cycle is not based on the calendar month.
How do I increase my current allotment?
If you are already a Cannabis Physicians patient it’s as easy as a phone call for a free telehealth increase appointment with your provider.

If you are not a Cannabis Physicians patient but would like us to certify your increase you must contact your current provider and have them revoke your certification. Maryland does not allow more than one active certification.

What can I purchase at a Maryland Dispensary?
Maryland currently allows card-holding patients to purchase all types of medicinal cannabis. Once you attain a card, you can purchase dry flowers, tinctures, oils, concentrates, topicals, vapes, pre-rolls, and edibles.
What if I don’t know what to purchase?
Call and schedule a telehealth appointment with one of our Medical Cannabis Product Specialists. Cannabis Physicians patients pay nothing for the appointment. Don’t worry, with a bit of medical history we will see non Cannabis Physicians patients for just $30. See our Cannabis Coaching page for more details.
How often do I have to see my provider for a certification?
Maryland requires patients to see their provider every year for a renewal. We remember your expiration date so you don’t have too. We will reach out to you via email, text and phone call to schedule your appointment.
Will my health insurance or Medicare/Medicaid cover the cost?
At this time, the cost of medical cannabis or associated appointments not reimbursable by any private or public insurance plan, Medicare or Medicaid, or through Veterans’ covered plans. **This is open for discussion in Annapolis at the August 2023 session. Contact your local delegate to be heard.
Is my medical cannabis use confidential?
Yes. We do not disclose your medical history with your written consent.
Can I grow cannabis at home with my medical cannabis card?
Yes, Maryland law allows those in the medical program to grow 4 medicinal plants. Recreational users (not untl July 1 of 2023) will be permitted to grow 2 plants.
What is the difference between your Medical Cannabis Registration and your Medical Cannabis Certification?

Your registration is required to update every 6 years BUT your certification is due every year.
